Over time, some polyps may turn into <\/span><span lang=\"ES-TRAD\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/spanish\/cancer\/colorectal\/basic_info\/what-is-colorectal-cancer.htm\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">cancer<\/span><\/a><\/span><span lang=\"ES-TRAD\" style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent: .5in;line-height: normal\"><span lang=\"ES-TRAD\" style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">According to the <\/span><span lang=\"ES-TRAD\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/es\/cancer\/cancer-de-colon-o-recto\/acerca\/estadisticas-clave.html\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">American Cancer Society<\/span><\/a><\/span><span lang=\"ES-TRAD\" style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">, despite improvements over the past decade, \u201ccolorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in the <\/span><span lang=\"ES-TRAD\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/es\/cancer\/cancer-de-colon-o-recto\/acerca\/estadisticas-clave.html\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">United States<\/span><\/a><\/span><span lang=\"ES-TRAD\" style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">.\u201d In Puerto Rico, the <\/span><span lang=\"ES-TRAD\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prgastro.org\/lo-que-usted-debe-saber-sobre-el-cancer-colorrectal-en-puerto-rico\/#:~:text=En%20Puerto%20Rico%20se%20reportan,los%20hombres%20en%20Puerto%20Rico.\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">Puerto Rican Association of Gastroenterology<\/span><\/a><\/span><span lang=\"ES-TRAD\" style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\"> found that \u201capproximately 1,500 cases of colon cancer are reported annually, of which 600 cases die from this <\/span><span lang=\"ES-TRAD\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prgastro.org\/lo-que-usted-debe-saber-sobre-el-cancer-colorrectal-en-puerto-rico\/#:~:text=En%20Puerto%20Rico%20se%20reportan,los%20hombres%20en%20Puerto%20Rico.\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">condition<\/span><\/a><\/span><span lang=\"ES-TRAD\" style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">.\u201d In addition, this type of cancer is the \u201csecond most common cancer in both women and <\/span><span lang=\"ES-TRAD\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prgastro.org\/lo-que-usted-debe-saber-sobre-el-cancer-colorrectal-en-puerto-rico\/#:~:text=En%20Puerto%20Rico%20se%20reportan,los%20hombres%20en%20Puerto%20Rico.\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">men <\/span><\/a><\/span><span lang=\"ES-TRAD\" style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">,\u201d and it is also \u201cthe second leading cause of cancer death in women and the third in <\/span><span lang=\"ES-TRAD\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prgastro.org\/lo-que-usted-debe-saber-sobre-el-cancer-colorrectal-en-puerto-rico\/#:~:text=En%20Puerto%20Rico%20se%20reportan,los%20hombres%20en%20Puerto%20Rico.\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">men<\/span><\/a><\/span><span lang=\"ES-TRAD\" style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent: .5in;line-height: normal\"><span lang=\"ES-TRAD\" style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">Therefore, it is extremely important to have screening tests done and to educate yourself on the treatments and possible risks that come with a positive diagnosis. cancer screening is a critical part of prevention and early detection. Screening also allows doctors to \u201cfind colorectal cancer before symptoms begin, when it may be more <\/span><span lang=\"ES-TRAD\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/espanol\/tipos\/colorrectal\/hoja-informativa-deteccion#qu-mtodos-se-usan-para-detectar-el-cncer-colorrectal-en-las-personas\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">treatable<\/span><\/a><\/span><span lang=\"ES-TRAD\" style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">.\u201d These tests also allow \u201cadenomas and polyps to be removed before they become cancer. That is, colorectal cancer screening may be a form of cancer prevention in addition to early <\/span><span lang=\"ES-TRAD\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/espanol\/tipos\/colorrectal\/hoja-informativa-deteccion#qu-mtodos-se-usan-para-detectar-el-cncer-colorrectal-en-las-personas\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">detection<\/span><\/a><\/span><span lang=\"ES-TRAD\" style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent: .5in;line-height: normal\"><span lang=\"ES-TRAD\" style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">It is suggested that people who have an average risk of colorectal cancer begin screening starting at age 45. Also, if there is a personal or family history of colorectal cancer, it is recommended to have screening tests done to detect either the first occurrence or a recurrence of this <\/span><span lang=\"ES-TRAD\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.net\/es\/tipos-de-c%C3%A1ncer\/c%C3%A1ncer-colorrectal\/detecci%C3%B3n\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">cancer<\/span><\/a><\/span><span lang=\"ES-TRAD\" style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">. <\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent: .5in;line-height: normal\"><span lang=\"ES-TRAD\" style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">There are several types of screening tests. These include: colonoscopy, computed tomography (CT or CAT) colonography, sigmoidoscopy, fecal occult blood test and fecal immunochemical test, double contrast barium enema, and stool DNA <\/span><span lang=\"ES-TRAD\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.net\/es\/tipos-de-c%C3%A1ncer\/c%C3%A1ncer-colorrectal\/detecci%C3%B3n\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">tests<\/span><\/a><\/span><span lang=\"ES-TRAD\" style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent: .5in;line-height: normal\"><span lang=\"ES-TRAD\" style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif\">At TOLIC, we know that a cancer diagnosis can alter your quality of life and that of your family.
