The construction industry represents the fundamental structure of a good economy; it attracts investors and talent in multiple areas, increases tourism, and creates jobs.
Although accidents can occur in any labor sector, in the construction industry, the highest number of accidents are reports, due to the complexity of their work and the diversity of their operations.
In August 2022, it was reported that construction workers in the United States are “70 % more likely to suffer” accidents and injuries on the job than employees of other occupations.
It has also been reported that 10 % of all employees in the construction industry suffer injuries on the job each year.
Falling, being struck by objects, electrocution, and getting caught by an object are the four most common types of accidents in construction.
But how can we prevent accidents in the construction industry? Here are a few suggestions:
1. Always use personal protective equipment (PPE)
2. Conduct safety inspections
3. Identify areas or equipment of potential danger/hazard
4. Keep materials and work equipment in good condition and discard those with damage
5. Conduct regular training and meetings on occupational safety issues
6. Make use of rest time (eat, hydrate, rest)
According to a report by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), in order to carry out all the works required to improve Puerto Rico’s infrastructure, thousands of trained employees will be needed, but although large amounts of money have already been allocated for this, the amount of registered employees fall short.
Taking this data into consideration, this industry would need to recruit staff in order to meet expectations. Many employers in this sector have taken the necessary measures to have training and instruction programs, as well as having insurance for accidents at work.
Responding to market needs, at TOLIC, we have a Private Temporary Non-Occupational Disability Insurance Plan (SINOT).). This is offered to employers with ten (10) or more employees and will allow them to offer their employees the benefits of being covered under an insurance plan managed by an insurance company, rather than a public insurance plan (Government Insurance Plan), with highly competitive rates and personalized services.
You can add additional coverages to our private SINOT plan, such as: funeral services and accidental death. Some of the requirements insurers must have to claim the benefits are: being unable to work as a result of an injury or injury that is not related to employment or a car accident, being in treatment with a duly licensed physician or chiropractor, and have received wages of at least $150 in an insured job during their basic year.
